Choosing a sperm donor
“Choosing a donor is quite a journey, initially you think it will be easy but it can be quite overwhelming because there is so much choice and also so much information, ultimately what I learned is to narrow your focus and look at the things that are most important to you. It can be difficult as a couple to find someone that you are both really happy with but we got there in the end. ” [Chloe Jenkins]
Finding the love of your life often result in the great wish of having a child. Being a lesbian it is pretty obvious that it’s nothing you just do – or that comes naturally. When Chloe and Emma from Glasgow, UK, met each other while in their mid 30s, they quickly starting talking about having a child. Emma was going to be the one carrying the baby being slightly younger than Chloe (and also healthier, according to Chloe).
The couple hoped they would conceive quickly and it was clear to both of them that using a sperm donor from a professional sperm bank was the only right option for them. They knew others who had gone through the same reflections and spoke fondly of getting help through a sperm bank:
“The first big decision is choosing a known donor or not. I pushed for us using a sperm bank because I didn’t feel comfortable with using someone we knew as I felt it complicated our family relationship with our future child” Chloe says.
As the couple resides in the UK choosing a non-contact wasn’t an option. It might not be the right solution for everyone but Chloe and Emma from the beginning felt that openness and honesty was the way to go so there wasn’t a doubt in their mind that using an open donor was the only and best decision for them and their future baby.
When going through the process of actually choosing a donor it became complicated. The couple felt overwhelmed by the options on the website https://www.europeanspermbank.com. They started out by going through the donor list separately – hoping that afterwards, when comparing the donors, they would have selected some of the same donors. That didn’t happen as they had different approaches:
“I started by looking at very detailed information in a search for the ‘perfect’ donor which became a little overwhelming. I took some advice from my parents and some friends who advised that I be much more instinctual about it (which was Emma’s approach!) they said find donors you connect with either through their pictures or with simple information like their jobs and interest and only then once you like someone check out the detailed info.”[Chloe Jenkins] Chloe says.
Finally, the couple sat down together and started their search for a donor by only using one filter: a Caucasian donor. They didn’t want to put any further layers of complexity on their future baby’s identity than necessary. They both wanted a donor they could connect to rather than being very specific on hair and eye color. Family medical history is something that takes up quite a bit in the extended profile. This is very important for some people when choosing a donor, but for Emma and Chloe it was much more important to feel some kind of connection with the donor’s interest:
“This for me made it all a much more natural process after all we don’t rule potential partners out based on their grandparent’s health history!”[Chloe Jenkins]
The donor list showed 50 available donors and the couple started out by looking at baby pictures. It wasn’t anything particular they were looking for – they just wanted to go with their gut feeling. They narrowed it down to about a dozen donors and then began to look through the donors’ profiles and staff impressions. Chloe and Emma tried to continue going with their gut feeling and ended up with seven potential donors and asked each other which of these really stood out. They were left with the final three options.
The final match came with the handwritten note. There wasn’t a doubt in their minds that they had found their donor. He was not perfect, but then who really is?
“In the end we are really happy about our choice as a couple and feel that we have a strong story to tell any future children about the donor who so kindly helped us to bring them into the world.”[Chloe Jenkins]

EMBRYOLAB – Fertility choices for lesbian women UNDER THE SUN
Equal rights include the right for lesbian women to have the choice to become mothers, as well as to choose when they want to start their journey to parenthood. Embryolab Fertility Clinic, one of the top clinics in Europe with more than twelve years of serving those who want to become parents, offers a unique solution.
Why Embryolab is the best choice
Embryolab’s uniqueness is based on its dedication and devotion to three main pillars: quality, innovation and transparency. In quality, in addition to ISO certification, Embryolab applies an internal total quality management system to make sure that provides a constant top quality service. Embryolab Academy designed this TQM system and have been teaching it to other clinics worldwide. In innovation, Embryolab possesses and uses the latest generation clinical and laboratory equipment, such as 3D ultrasound scans, Embryoscope, Miri and Minc incubators. Finally in transparency, the focus is on the end result so pricing policy is transparent. Embryolab applies any tools and methods needed for a successful result, such as Embryoscope, blastocyst culture, assisted hatching, IMSI, ICSI etc. without charging extra for each one of these.
The Embryolab Team
Embryolab is one of a very few fertility clinics that works as a team. Every doctor and embryologist, although they handle individual cases, discuss everything at a daily team meeting. In this way, Embryolab have seen that the blending of expertise of every team member results into better decisions and better results for the patient. Every person is different and so as the causes of infertility, so the Embryolab team focuses on each case and offers individual protocols and attention.
What are the fertility options for lesbian women?
The options that Embryolab offers for lesbian women depend of course on their individual needs. The IVF/ICSI program with sperm donation is suitable for women who have been trying to conceive through insemination (IUI) unsuccessfully. Embryolab also offers a comprehensive donation program (both eggs and sperm) for women whose egg reserve does not allow them to become pregnant with their own. Finally, Embryolab runs an egg freezing program for women who want to preserve their fertility. These are usually career oriented women who want to postpone becoming mothers but want to preserve their young fertility levels.
Our IVF/ICSI with sperm donation program
Embryolab collaborates with prestigious and accredited foreign sperm banks. At these banks, sperm donors are selected according to very strict criteria, in terms of fertility, physical health, inherited characteristics and mental health. A health certificate support all samples for the particular donor. At Embryolab, lesbian women can select a sperm sample based on the physical characteristics and blood type of the donor they prefer. In addition, they have the option to store a sample from the same donor for a subsequent pregnancy.
Our Embryo donation program
Embryolab operates an Embryo Donation program. Embryos for this program come from donor oocytes and are fertilized with sperm selected by the recipient from a certified sperm bank. All our donors follow strict medical, genetic and psychological screening so as we can guarantee the safety of delivery of a healthy child. The success rate of our program is one of the highest, reaching 70% clinical pregnancy and 55% birth rate from the first attempt, while almost 90% of the women who enter our program manage to achieve the dream of parenthood after maximum three embryo transfers.
Our Egg Freezing program
The assisted reproduction science is one of the most dynamically progressing fields of modern medicine. One of the most recent and perhaps the most exciting development in IVF is egg freezing. Egg freezing and storage, places contemporary women in control of their own reproductive potential, and releases them from the pressure of time!
Egg freezing while at age of high fertility, enables young women to safe store their eggs and allows them to focus on their carrier while relieved from the stress of declining fertility as they grow older.
The modern vitrification method overcomes all the drawbacks faced until recently that prohibited successful egg cryopreservation. Today, the preservation of female fertility is an achievable goal, up to 93% of cryopreserved eggs survive after thaw and can be successfully fertilized, and achieving similar pregnancy rates to fresh eggs.
Embryolab has established and offers a very successful egg freezing program for women interested in fertility preservation, since 2008. The success of egg freezing is based on:
The highly skillful lab personnel with excellent knowledge and long experience on egg freezing with the use of the vitrification method.
The use of certified vitrification media and carrier system.
The continuous real time monitoring of all the critical parameters for the storage safety with the use of strict protocols and procedures, to ensure optimum preservation of all valuable eggs.
Embryolab team strives for excellence in clinical care and provision of services. In particular, a thorough co-ordination scheme is laid out for each woman before treatment initiation, so as to facilitate treatment and to minimise stay in Greece. Clinical tests and laboratory investigations can take place home and all legal documents dealt with at the ease of one’s own place. Treatment can be initiated home and clinical information be communicated with the medical team in Greece, so as the woman arrives at the final stage of treatment..
Embryolab is based in the City of Thessaloniki, a Roman city 2500 years of age. Thessaloniki was built by Alexander the great and named after his sister. It sits as a crossroad of civilizations that left their footprints through the ages. Thessaloniki’s Ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine heritage is mixed with the contemporary Greek, Turkish, Slav, Jewish and Armenian culture influences that are still alive in the city.
No more than an hour drive from the city center, one can find the well-known Chalkidiki peninsula, a popular holiday destination with some of the most attractive beaches in Greece. No more than an hour drive from the other side of the city, one can find the astonishing Mount Olympus, the residence of the ancient Greek Gods.
Embryolab offers the opportunity to combine fertility treatment with holidays all year round, with beach resorts in the summer, city holidays in the autumn and spring and mountain holidays in the winter.
ELLA Travel trip to Mendoza, Argentina
We cannot thank enough Tourism Mendoza, Argentina, for inviting us at the 4 days spectacular yearly event of La Vendimia, to discover this amazing region and develop LGBT tourism.
DAY | DÍA 1/4:
On our first day we went to discover the Enoteca, one of the heritage buildings of Argentina’s wine industry, whose mission is to promote the consumption of wine in Argentina, spreading its culture and business growth through communication strategies and actions. The installations were amazing (built in 1902!) and had this powerful tough and romantic touch of passionate wine making.
We then were driven to la Bodega « Casa el Enemigo » (House of the Enemy) for a visit of the winery, wine tasting and a delicious lunch in the company of the other international press guests. Alejandro and Adrianna, the owners of the winery, decided to make a wine together, a wine that would represent their deep respect for history and tradition, and we must say we were delighted to find out their goal has been reached beautifully.
After a short rest at the Hotel Aconcagua we enjoyed a event at the Terraza Mirador Ciudad de Mendoza:”Ciclo Música y Vino en las Alturas” that inspired us deeply, followed by a cocktail at the Municipality of Mendoza where we had the pleasure to share some time with Lic.
DAY | DÍA 2/4
Tunuyán is a city in the west of the province of Mendoza, Argentina, located on the western shore of the Tunuyán River, 80 km (50 mi) south from the provincial capital Mendoza. Along with the Tupungato Department and the San Carlos Department it makes up the « Valle de Uco » region, which is famous in the Argentine wine industry for its important and modern vineyards and wineries.
We were amazed by the amazing nature, traditional architecture and historical monuments that make this region an absolute delight for all senses.
After a few hours enjoying the beautiful sights, we discovered a winery that is probably of of the most beautifully designed one has seen so far: Bodega O Fournier, one of the leading wineries in Ribera de Duero.
There we enjoyed a hilarious cooking class in which we both learnt delicious tips to give an Argentinian regional touch to our home cooking, followed by a splendid lunch by the waterside.
We enjoyed the lunch so much, and the company of the other international journalists, that it was hard to go back to the Hotel to get ready for the amazing Parade « Via Blanca de las Reina », the White Avenue of the Queens.
This is a parade of brightly colored floats which pass through the main avenues in the center of the city. Each float represents a different department of the province and carries each department’s elected queen, accompanied by her entourage. The parade was filled, the public was very enthusiastic and happiness was thriving all around. One must admit that Argentinan women are very beautiful and warm, as much as their culture, but this; we already knew ;).
DAY | DÍA 3 + 4/4
Saturday was marked by the visit at another wonderful winery, Trivento, specialised in the production of Malbec wines, and in which we also enjoyed a succulent lunch. We really have seen some of the best of Argentina during this stay!
However, the cherry on the cake has been the amazing National Party of La Vendimia in the Greek Theater Frank Romero Day, in which we have enjoyed amazing shows and entertainment!
Songs, dances, lights… an event of massive magnitude!
On next day, we finished this stunning press trip with a visit to the Bodega Nieto Senetiner, that elaborates one of the best Argentinian wines since 1888.

Lieurene (Lilo) Tran #IamELLA
Lilo Tran, Blogger & Social Media Management, Los Angeles, California, USA
“Why do you make your life harder for yourself?”, a question I was often asked throughout my childhood. Ever since I was born, I’ve always knew I was different.
At the age of three, I was diagnosed profoundly deaf. Being the first Deaf person in my family, my parents were devastated in the beginning because they had no idea what to do. They feared that I would have such a hard life because I am different. The easy solution for anyone with a Deaf child was to put them in an institute or put them in special education.
My mother did the exact opposite. I received my first hearing aids and attended to an Oral school, where I would learn how to talk with speech therapy. It wasn’t until I was 13 when I attended middle school with the DHH program. That was the first time I was exposed to American Sign Language. However, that’s where I also learned I was even more different. I couldn’t fit in both worlds: Hearing and Deaf.
Determined, I did eventually learn Sign Language. When I entered High School, I made a promise to myself. I wasn’t going to let anything hold me back. I became the first Deaf person to join the Hearing Basketball team, a musical play (no I didn’t sing, I signed), Track and Field and so much more.
But the funny part is: out of all the challenges I had to faced in my life, the hardest thing I ever had to do was come out as a Lesbian.
At first, It was hard for my family – except for my brother who accepted it right away. For a while, they thought it was my choice to live that way and that I was just infatuated with my ex-girlfriend at the time. After a few years, and seeing the struggle I went through of not being fully happy, my mom finally accepted it.
So why did I make my life harder for myself?
I didn’t. I have accepted that being Deaf and Lesbian is a part of who I am. It doesn’t hinder my ability to do whatever I can achieve in my life.
So after graduating with my B.S. degree, I packed up everything and went backpacking for two months. It was hard for my mom because of her fear of me being a target since I am Deaf Lesbian. I didn’t let that stop me, instead I have hopes that I can help spread awareness and inspire others that it is okay to be different.
I am proud to be part of the #iamELLA movement because I am a proud Deaf Lesbian.

StorkKlinik for lesbians dreaming of motherhood
Tell us a bit about how the StorkKlinic started.
StorkKlinik was founded by Nina Stork in 1999. Nina Stork was the first to open such a clinic in Denmark, where she could help single women and lesbians to have children. Many women have since come to the clinic, and there are now nearly 4,700 children born after treatments here.
The clinic has also been performing IVF, ICSI and freezing eggs since 2011 and has been a part of the VivaNeo group since 2015.
Why do women from many parts of Europe travel to Denmark ?
Women choose StorkKlinik because we offer such a high level of service. We are open every day of the year. Our employees answer calls promptly, and as a rule, we answer mail requests the same day. On top of that, we have very short waiting list for treatments. We speak many languages in the clinic and have translated most of our written material.
We have extensive experience with alternative ways to form a family, including Rainbow Families.
We are honest and open minded. We always have time to listen and talk to each client.
The cozy clinic is designed to make you feel comfortable and is located right in the heart of Copenhagen.
How would I get started with a treatment at the StorkKlinik ?
The StorkKlinik receives inquiries by phone or mail. The client fills out our electronic journal on the website and submits hormone tests and any previous records. After assessment by our experienced fertility doctors, we may recommend insemination, insemination with hormonal therapy or IVF. Sometimes we recommend women to consider egg donation.
Who can you help in StorkKlinik ?
We work under the Danish Health Authorities in Denmark and you can receive fertility treatment until the age of 46. We gladly help lesbians and singles.
Which sperm donors can you offer?
At the StorkKlinik you can choose from contactable and non-contactable donors. It is also possible to buy a donor with an extended profile from one of the Danish sperm banks and store semen in StorkKlinik. We have made special arrangements with Danish sperm banks, which benefits our customers in the form of more favorable prices.
At the StorkKlinik it is also possible to bring a donor who you know. The donor should of course be screened for HIV and Hepatitis B and C, as well as get an examination in the clinic.
How do StorkKlinik ensure that customers are able to take care of a child ?
We do a lot of talking to our customers before we begin fertility treatment. Everyone should have a conversation with one of our experienced specialists. We can determine whether the customer will be able to go through pregnancy successfully, and take care of a child.
Are there many women who return to StorkKlinik ?
Yes, we have many who come back for their second or third child. We also often get visits from “our children”, who would like to see the clinic where they were “made”. We have a small stork teddy bear, which we provide to children, and this always makes them very happy. Every year we organize a “Stork Get-together” in June, which all parents and children from StorkKlinik are invited to. It is a happy day with the opportunity to meet others and new friends.
